My name is Domenica, I qualified as a driving instructor in my early twenties, worked around family commitments and children for the next 15 years, first as a contractor for a large company with a dozen dual control vehicles used to teach driving and later had my own driving school. My children were lucky to be able to sit behind the steering wheel of a car at a young age. We lived on a large tract of land and they were able to move the car along a very long driveway (being private property we were not breaking any laws) and we also had close family living on a farm, which meant that at every possible chance we would drive into the country just so they could practice their driving skills. By the time my children reached their teens I realized that their skill and knowledge far surpassed the average student’s. This lead me to investigate the reasons WHY. At the time there were conflicting opinions among driving instructors as to what they were expected to teach their students. Some believed that teaching a student to pass the driving test was enough, while others went further by actually teaching their students to drive a vehicle and believe me when I say that there is a HUGE difference between the two. I decided that it was time to do something to address this problem, so… I sold my driving school and went to work for the local college ( part of a major university) as they had just started a program preparing teenagers to obtain their " Learner’s Permit" and also giving them practical driving training and they were looking for experienced staff.
